Twitter has been one of the most interesting Social Media tools to have come out in the past few years, and now the rumor mill has it that Google is the late stage deals to purchase Twitter. For those who don’t know about twitter, it is a micro-blogging platform that allows users to submit 140 character articles, in real time, to their followers. These are known as “Tweets”. There have been many arguments for why Twitter is a great tool for businesses to use in order to connect with not only their customers, but also prospects, partners, and employees. Heck, some say that Obama won the election because of Twitter!
So back to my point about Google’s intention to buy Twitter. I think that this shows a lot of foresight for Google. Last month Twitter turned down Facebook’s offer to buy them for $500M (in overvalued Facebook stock), but this deal seems to be real.
According to Tech Crunch Google will use Twitter for search purposes. Basically what’s happening is that although Google does it’s best to index new content at a fast pace, pages are submitted and content is shared in real time through twitter, thus creating an opportunity to have the freshest content always available to people searching on their site.
So, how will this affect users of Twitter? Probably not by much. We can all hope that Google will not change it too much, but if they do take it over, we can all guarantee that consistent and strategic use of Twitter will be come even more important than it is currently.

It’s about time. I have said in my previous comments here and elsewhere that it’s just a matter of time before Google attempts to buy Twitter. But yes, you are right – it’s a bit late in the game for them, especially with the value of Twitter going through the roof. I am sure they will pay much more this time. Who knows – this could be a sale that will be more than YouTube.com. Who knows? Depends on whether the Twitter boys are desperate for money or not.
The payoff for Google is two-fold:
1. They get real-time search
2. They get another popular venue to place Adsense
Payoff for Twitter, Biz and Ev get very, very rich yet again.
Strong precedent and logic for this acquisition to happen and I think it’s just a matter of time until it occurs. I real mystery is not about Twitter/Google, the real mystery is who buys Facebook. Microsoft? Likely contender. They are always playing catchup to Google it seems. They certainly aren’t winning at the search game.
Conversely, Google is not winning at the “open social” game either. Facebook, with 200+ members and growing at a phenomenal pace, is becoming quite literally the operating system for the new web. That’s a winning strategy for Microsoft if ever I saw one.
Both these behemoths have more than enough capital to pay Williams, Stone and/or Zuckerberg any amount that would be asked. Money is not an issue. It’s just a waiting game at this point.
I totally agree. Everything at Google revolves around their adsense content network. I have a feeling that this their ad program will not be as effective as social media marketing is becoming within a year or so though!
