If Twitter Can Effect the Suppressed in Iran, What Could It Do For Your Business?

In this day n’ age of continuous controversy, people around the globe are finding new-fangled ways to express their opinions about the world around them.  And more power to them! So of course it’s no surprise that social media is becoming the mechanism of choice to do so.

This became most recently apparent from the continuous media coverage regarding the battle for justice in Iran, with concerned citizens turning to social media tools like twitter at higher rates than ever seen before.   Although this very lightly scratches the surface of the current multiple efforts to suppress the people there, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made the dangerous decision of restricting Iran’s internet usage.    Big brother is being aggressively sidestepped though, with Twitter as the MVP.  Citizens are keeping communication with the sites main utensil called “tweets”, where shorts blurbs about the situation are being sent by mass to anyone with a cell phone.  Because the use of the text messages are still monitored, twitter allows for everything from protest planning to a simple safe haven for people to talk, without the interruption of the eagle eye government.

Twitter has hit our homeland just as hard though, when a mere few months ago the air was thick with controversy over the Obama election.    Again, people were simply looking for a place to network with others with similar views on the issues at hand, and twitter became an excellent safe-house to do so.

What many aren’t away of though, is that Twittter, with all the force and power it’s expressing, doesn’t cost a cent to use.  And not only that, but the company itself isn’t even making money!  So in essence, it’s a way to reach millions of people, for free, with no strings attached.  That’s a trifecta from business heaven!  With such a powerful and massive following now, it’s time for business in every playing field to jump on the bandwagon while this program is still hot.  We are all seeing firsthand the raw power this social media tool is capable of across the global scene, and I think it could have a similar effect if handled correctly in the hands of any business that chooses to give it a chance.

The twitter naysayers out there have convinced themselves that the use of twitter is a media fad, not necessarily worthy of their time when it comes to the business world.  But the beauty of social media is the idea of combining as much social media ammunition in order to be heard, and I’m saying twitter should be one of them.

So the money question; if twitter is involved in the lives of those suffering from global injustice battles or is having an effect on governmental elections, what could it do for your business?
