As you may or may not know, I have a background in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and would say that I understand how to work with the search engine algorithms to influence them in one way or another. But less about me, and more about what this has to do with social media marketing.
Lately, Social Media / Web 2.0 websites have become hotspots in Google, and what I mean by that, is the content that is within them is showing in Google at an alarming rate. Now I’m not saying that this is the only reason to add content to these sites, but it does make you think about the type of business results that one could gain with a great article strategically placed…
Now, I just read a post by Blogger Steve Rubel, called “SEO Shenanigans Pose a Clear and Present Danger to Social Media” talking about the threat that SEO companies leveraging social media websites for SEO proposes to the community. I agree that social media websites should not be leveraged just for SEO, but if you know about SEO, the majority of these Web 2.0 websites are setup with their external links having “no-follow” attached to them. For those who don’t know about “no-follow” links, they basically tell Google not to count the link, and also that they should not leave your site to index the linked page. Usually, the more links you have will help with your SEO, especially if anchor text is used with your keywords in it. So basically, the links are good for human traffic, but as far as Google counting the links for SEO purposes, they become null! So bottom line here, if you are trying to leverage social media websites for the purposes of link building, then your efforts are fruitless the majority of the time. To gain effective traffic and drive business, articles should be written offering great content, tips, and information. That way, a prospective client will read and appreciate you, view you as the expert, and best of all, tell other people about what you. Thats the way social media works, and although if you do things correctly you will show up in the search engines, its all about the content and making sure its shared correctly with your market!
