One of the manifold tools that sets’ facebook apart from the rest of the social media network pack is the event tool it offers. By allowing you to create a detailed and personalized invitation to any kind of event you desire and instantly delivering it to your entire social network, it’s rapidly becoming an essential tool for businesses around the globe. The invitation includes the basics of the event (who, what, when, where and how), but leaves room for some personalization upon delivery, with an option to attach a customized message for the whole guest list.
The term “events” itself is ever changing though with the current trend of teleconferences, webcasts and live video chats, which is where facebook aggressively stepped in. Don’t get me wrong, the events section is wonderful for quickly updating friends and family about everything from a 21st birthday debauchery to your kids slumber party, but when it comes to your business, its magic. Companies are relying more and more on their web based social networks to gain the needed publicity and growth, which is demolishing the age of business cards, written calendar event lists and individualized email updates. With the use of tools like facebook events, business can reach those outside of your email address books and alert people around the globe who have facebook befriended them for any reason from personal searches to mere common interests. Its allowing consumers to become as involved as they chose with those they follow on the web, but also allowing for more opportunities to do so.
Like all good things currently booming in the social media craze, it comes with a quick downside, which if handled correctly doesn’t completely taint the beauty of this tool. Because facebook doesn’t set a limit on the number of friends and followers you can obtain, the guest lists for these events can become, to put it lightly, extensive. People from every corner of the world can easily become a friend on facebook, which is both a blessing and disappointment when sending out the invitation. After the painfully easy step by step section for the details regarding the event, you have to manually select each person from your friends list that you wish to alert. Again like i said, for the kids slumber party, this works great when only a few friends are on the guest list. For businesses however, when you have a following of thousands of people, each person needs to be manually clicked on, which besides causing possible carpal tunnel, takes a little patience. The blessing part though; your reaching thousands of people if you choose, that although may not be necessarily available, but they’re getting the buzz about what your business has going on. If anything, that’s more valuable than the little time you may need to set aside to click on your thousands of friends. In the end, its worth it.
With the possibility of almost instantly (and for no money down) creating events, inviting/alerting extensive national and global guest lists and gaining even more turnout, facebook is quickly becoming the new event guru.
